NIPF Pilot Project Phase 2 - Wrap Up

Through MN DNR Forestry, the Koochiching SWCD is currently wrapping up final tasks on the NIPF Pilot Project Phase 2 contract. The scope of work was developed to build additional data tracking and coordination between SWCD forestry, the Board of Soil & Water Resources (BWSR), and MN DNR private forest management programs. Additional private forest management (PFM) information recorded from projects and outreach are shared between the agencies and can help conservation service providers better assess the needs of forest landowners, prioritize beneficial stewardship practices, and report on accomplishments.

SWCD staff developed a sophisticated PFM database to record information about PFM services and participation in programs and outreach. Staff attended access database training via Central Lakes College and used the knowledge to design a data tracking system customized for PFM recording and streamlined for information sharing.

To help landowners find information on current PFM projects and opportunities, private forest management web pages were added to the Koochiching SWCD website. This included detailed stewardship outreach discussion about forest planning and management practices such as tree planting, sustainability, timber harvesting, and wildlife habitat considerations as well as information regarding state and federal agency cost-share and protection programs.

In addition, Koochiching SWCD staff will work with DNR PFM program staff to develop new and/or enhance existing systems that can track project costs and matching revenues and resources.
