FILING FOR SWCD SUPERVISOR
Minnesota citizens interested in influencing natural resources issues at the local level are encouraged to run for Supervisor of Koochiching Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD).
SWCDs are local units of government that manage and direct natural resource management programs at the local level. Districts work in both urban and rural settings, with landowners and with other units of government, to carry out a program for the conservation, use, and development of soil, water, and related resources.
SWCD supervisor positions are filled through general elections. Results from the 2022 election were as follows: Ralph Lewis was re-elected as the District I Supervisor, Richard Dreher was re-elected as the District IV Supervisor, and Jody Reller was newly elected as the District V Supervisor. The next election will take place in 2024 where District II, currently held by George Aitchison and District III, currently held by Eldon Voigt will be up for election.
SWCDs are a primary source of conservation information, support, and program management for landowners and other local units of government. They are the technical experts that understand their specific communities’ needs and help landowners navigate conservation programs from start to finish. An elected board of Supervisors governs each of Minnesota’s 88 SWCDs.
Candidates are elected county wide, but must reside in one of the nomination districts up for election. SWCD Supervisors serve four year terms.
Supervisors meet monthly to discuss the business of the SWCD, including state grant allocations to landowners, district conservation priorities, coordination with other local units of government and state and federal agencies. Supervisors do not receive a salary, although they do receive compensation for attending meetings and are reimbursed for expenses.

DISTRICT I
From a point located at the NW corner of Sec.7 – T 160 N – R 29W, thence South along a line on the Western boundary of Koochiching County to a point located at the SW corner of Sec. 31 – T 156 N – R 29W, thence East along a line to a point located at the SE corner of Sec. 36 – T 156 N – R 25W, thence North to a point located at the NE corner of Sec. 13 – T 158 N – R 25 W, at its junction with Rainy River, thence West along the United States border to the point of beginning.
